Major Revamp of Laby®-GI Compressor on FSRU
Golar Management Norway is one of the world’s largest independent owners and operators of LNG midstream infrastructure. They decided to deploy their FSRU (floating storage and regasification unit) vessel Golar Freeze with a new charterer who will deliver gas to Jamaica's sole power utility JPS. In order to meet the new process parameters, a major revamp of the existing Laby®-GI Compressor (used as minimum send-out compressor on board) was required under high time pressure.
„Thanks to the compressor revamp, we were able to repurpose our Golar Freeze vessel within the given tight time frame. The technical solution offered and subsequent project execution completely met
our expectations. Burckhardt Compression was proactive, available at the right time, with the right plan, the right offer and the right team. We really appreciated its rapid and flexible responses to unanticipated
situations.“Gabriele Pipitone, Vessel Manager,
Golar Management
Customer Challenges:
- Existing FSRU vessel to be used for new charterer
- Discharge pressure of a Laby®-GI on the FSRU had to be increased from 45 bar to 65 bar
- Compressor hasn’t been in operation for several years
- Space constraints on board the vessel, highly compact construction and harsh marine environment
- Tight time schedule
Application Description:
Type | Burckhardt Compression before: 4LP250-3A_1 after: 5LP250-4S_1 |

Burckhardt Compression Solution:
- Engineering study of the complete compressor system and auxiliaries to
- verify feasibility, including clear definition of necessary changes to fit the new
parameters - Increase discharge pressure from 45 bar to 65 bar by adding a fourth stage of
compression, along with extra auxiliaries, piping and other modifications - Special solution applied avoiding the need for a more powerful motor
- Global network of Service Centers for speed and flexibility
- Round-the-clock supervision by Burckhardt Compression engineers to ensure
safe and reliable project execution
